We developed a chrome extension that could blur dozens of porn websites.

Inspiration:

Recently, Pornhub, the world's largest pornographic website faced an investigation alleging child abuse and non-consensual sexual behavior. Although the website removes all the related videos, the effects could not be erased. Undoubtedly, child protection is always an important topic. How can we protect children from these porn sites? Hence, we came up with the idea of developing a Google Chrome Extension to blur the porn site whenever the user tries to open it.

What it does:

Our project is able to protect children from porn sites by blocking (blurring) porn websites so that these children will not be affected by these websites.

How we built it:

We first built a Google Chrome extension. Afterward, we added functionality to this extension so that it could blur porn sites when it is turned on.

• Javascript

Challenges we ran into:

We had some difficult times to find and download different resources that we need and changed our plan midway because we are not able to finish our original idea without these resources. We did not have a lot of time when we started our back up plan to build another project.

Accomplishments we're proud of:

We are able to make something that has real value and make a contribution to child protection. Our project could help parents all over the world protect their children from porn sites.

What we've learned:

We learned the procedure of building a Google Chrome Extension.

What's next:

Our next step is merging open-source computer version API’s (Google Cloud Vision API or NSFWJS) to the project, so our chrome extension will be able to detect any inappropriate content automatically and blur associated web pages, which will help us to form a better, healthier web environment for children in a wider range of scenarios.
