Description as a Tweet:

This is the first website specific to UMass residence halls and undergraduate students to have a roommate specific search website catered to their preferences.

Inspiration:

This would help undergraduates to help find possible roommates in just a matter of few clicks.

What it does:

This is the first website specific to UMass residence halls and undergraduate students to have a roommate specific search website catered to their preferences.
This roommate search website specializes in filtering according to your preferred criteria based on Gender, noise level preference, cleanliness level, and dorm preference.
We have added all on campus housing possibilities and residence halls.
This would help undergraduates to help find possible roommates in just a matter of few clicks, especially for first year students entering the world of independent living for the first time.
Instead of going through Spire and navigating through social media platforms to find a suitable roommate, they can just use this website to connect to people who might be suitable to be their roommate.
We have Comment, Filter, Profile Post, Edit Profile features.
We have made sure we securely use the data given to us by the users.

How we built it:

We have used JS, React, HTML, Firebase, CSS

Technologies we used:

  • HTML/CSS
  • Javascript
  • React
  • Misc

Challenges we ran into:

We faced a lot of issues designing the chat component and how to get the feature going.
The time was a little less so we postponed this idea and added a comment functionality instead
We also faced the challenges of choosing the appropriate technology, choosing the right functional criteria for people to choose roommates.

Accomplishments we're proud of:

We are proud to make a unique website to find a perfect roommate for each person and make the experience fun instead of cumbersome. We also like how the website is user friendly and beneficial to all undergraduates.

What we've learned:

This was our first website app. Making this was fun and enthralling. We learned how to overcome small obstacles and make progress.

What's next:

We will be adding the chat functionality next and we will try to make the User Experience better.
We would like to extend our project to all colleges and not just UMass and are looking forward to starting with the 5 college-consortium.
Based on the response this app gets, we also plan to update the registration parameters and add some other fields such as: School year, Major, Instagram handle, etc.
We also plan to use Machine Learning to show recommendations to the user based on his past filtering.

Built with:

We built this app by using HTML, CSS, Javascript, ReactJS and Firebase(Google Cloud) for our backend

Prizes we're going for:

  • Best Documentation
  • Best Venture Pitch
  • Best Web Hack
  • Best Domain Name
  • Best Beginner Software Hack
  • Best Beginner Web Hack
  • Best Use of Google Cloud
